WINSIDE, NE — Kindergarten and first-grade students from Winside Public School enjoyed a hands-on lesson in fire safety this week during a special field trip to the local fire station as part of Fire Prevention Week activities. The annual observance, held each October, aims to educate communities about fire hazards and promote life-saving safety practices in homes and schools.
Excitement filled the air as the young students arrived at the Winside Volunteer Fire Department, where they were warmly welcomed by Fire Chief Don Skokan, firefighter Kyle Skokan, and firefighter Chris Olander. The visit gave the children a rare opportunity to explore the fire station, see the fire trucks up close, and learn about the important work firefighters do every day to protect the community.
During the tour, firefighters demonstrated how they quickly put on their gear in emergency situations, explaining each piece and its purpose. They also introduced the children to essential firefighting tools and equipment, emphasizing how each helps save lives and property. The firefighters shared important fire safety tips with the students, including the need to check smoke detectors regularly, create a family escape plan with two ways out of every room, and never play with matches or lighters. Each student received a fire hat and a safety-themed goodie bag containing coloring books, stickers, and fire prevention materials to reinforce the lessons learned during the visit.
Teachers expressed appreciation to the fire department for providing such a fun and educational experience. “The kids learned so much and really enjoyed the hands-on activities,” said kindergarten teacher Kailey Hanson. “It’s a visit they’ll remember for years, and the safety messages are ones they can carry with them at home”.
The event was especially meaningful because of the strong family connections within the department. Fire Chief Don Skokan and his son, firefighter Kyle Skokan, were present to interact with the children and share their passion for firefighting. Don’s grandchildren also attended as part of the student group, making the visit even more special for the family. Don’s wife, Patty Skokan, joined the festivities, highlighting the family’s deep commitment to community service. For Kyle, the day was a unique opportunity to be both a dad and uncle while helping teach the next generation about fire safety.
Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder for families to review their own safety plans and stay prepared for emergencies. The Winside Fire Department’s community outreach exemplifies how local firefighters work not only to respond to emergencies but also to educate and protect residents before disasters happen.
