Please tell us about yourself and your family:
I was born and raised in western Nebraska and spent much of my childhood growing up in Grant, Nebraska. My father was a Business Teacher and Head Basketball Coach at Grant High School while my mom was a photo typesetter for the local newspaper. Both my brother (Roger) and I were very active and participated in football, basketball, and track and field all through our school years. We also played Legion baseball in Ogallala as Grant did not field a team.
We moved from Grant the summer prior to my senior year in high school. I graduated from Bellevue East High School in 1982. It was quite the culture shock for me as I went from a school averaging 25 students per grade to a graduating class of over 400. Upon graduation, I went off to college where I played football and graduated in four years with my B.S. Degree in Comprehensive Social Sciences. It was also during this time that I married the love of my life, Michele (Yerger) Lawson, prior to my junior year in 1984.
My wife and I have been married for 34 years. She has been the Director of the Wesley Day Care Center in Norfolk since 1999 and is also a licensed Cosmetology Instructor. We have three children; Brooke (30) and husband Cletus Woeppel of Norfolk; Lance Lawson (28) of Norfolk; and Sydney (22) and husband Matt Miller of Norfolk. All three are graduates of Norfolk High School.
Brooke received her Associate’s Degree from NECC and Sydney is currently taking classes to become a PT Assistant and also possesses her CNA Certificate. Lance graduated with a B.S. Degree in Sports Administration from UNK. Brooke and Sydney both work for their mother while Lance is a supervisor at UPS.
We are also the proud grandparents of two wonderful grandchildren; Kayde Thomas-Earl Miller (4 yr) and Darby Joy Miller (2 yr). Brooke and Cletus are expecting are expecting their first child due in early 2019. What a joy they bring to our lives and we look forward to many years of watching them grow and develop!
What is your philosophy of education?
In a nutshell...
“Those who say it can’t be done are usually interrupted by those doing it.”
“Just try to make the world a better place for your having been here.”
