Mason started the season wrestling at 113 compiling a 2-7 record before dropping to the 106 pound weight class. He finished the season with a 13-12 record in varsity competition. Sean’s District Bracket had four other vary talented wrestlers in the class and it is possible all four District wrestlers could earn medals in Omaha. Sean is on track to become a member of the club of Wildcat wrestlers who have won four state medals. Sean’s dad Chris was a three time state qualifier for Winside from 1990-93.

126 Colby Erickson - Junior 12-18 26-18 30-8 (68-44)

Creighton 4th North Bend 1st South Sioux City 3rd Winside 1st Battle Creek 3rd Oakland Craig 2nd Ainsworth 2nd Clearwater 3rd District D-2 District Champion State Qualifier
Colby qualified for the state tournament a year ago placing 3rd at the district meet. While not placing at the state meet Colby ended the year with a win in Omaha and finished with 26-18 record. Winning the District Championship puts Colby in a good position to possibly earn a medal at the Century Link Center. Pay particular attention to the opposing coaches’ comments “Here come the legs”, as soon as Colby walks onto the mat.

132 Marcos Escalara - Junior 28-17 40-9 42-1 (110-27)
Creighton 1st North Bend 1st South Sioux City 1st Winside 1st Battle Creek 1st Lewis and Clark 1st Oakland Craig 1st Ainsworth 1st Clearwater 1st District D-2 District Champion State Qualifier
Marcos qualified for the state meet as a Freshman after compiling a 28-17 record but did not medal. A year ago after finishing second in the district tournament he won the State Championship at 132 pounds with victories over four opponents who were rated in the top five in the weight class. His win over Drew Loberg of Randolph in the Championship match may have been the biggest upset of the tournament after having lost to Loberg three times during the regular season. Marcos is currently rated No. 1 at 132 lbs by Coach Tyler Herman of Amherst.

138 Kevin Ross - Senior 20-8 18-10 (38-18) Lewis and Clark 2nd Ainsworth 2nd District D-2 4th State Qualifier
Kevin is a senior who transferred into Winside High School for his Junior year. He was active in youth wrestling in the northeast area of the United States for several years. Kevin wrestled at 145 lbs last year and fell one match short of qualifying for the state meet in Omaha. Kevin wrestled top seed and state rated No. 2 Drew Loberg a close match before losing 9-3 in the semi-finals and earning a fourth place finish and trip to the Century Link.

145 Zachary Morris - Sophomore 17-18 33-13 (50-31)

Creighton 4th North Bend 2nd South Sioux City 2nd Winside 2nd Lewis and Clark 2nd Clearwater 2nd District D-2 3rd State Qualifier
Zach went 17-15 a year ago at 138 pounds and qualified for the state meet by earning a third place district finish. This weight class in District D-2 was also loaded with top rated Brandon French of Scribner and no less than five other wrestlers in the weight class being listed as possible contenders in Omaha. Zach is member of one of the Wildcat’s wrestling families following Dad Ed and brothers Eric and Dan.

152 Hayden King - Sophomore 7-26 21-22 (28-48)
South Sioux City 3rd Winside 2nd District D-2 Did not qualify
Hayden like his younger brother Mason has vastly improved his wrestling skills from a year ago. His freshman year was his first year competing in the sport and went from 7 wins a year ago to 21 wins this year. Hayden’s showed vast improvement from a year ago and should be a factor on next years Wildcat squad.

160 Sam Wolfe - Senior 10-20 14-27 13-25 24-15 (61-87)
North Bend 3rd South Sioux City 3rd Winside 1st Lewis and Clark 3rd Oakland Craig 4th Clearwater 2nd District D-2 Lost in the heartbreak round.
Sam Wolfe is the type of wrestler that walks onto the mat and always looks smaller than his opponent and many times has been. Watching Sam develop his wrestling skills for the for the last four years there is one thing learned - his opponent had better be prepared to wrestle a full match. Sam this year at the D-2 district meet lived the true meaning of the term “heartbreak round” used by wrestlers, coaches and parents.

160 Isaiah Muhs - Sophomore 9-20 14-19 (23-39)
Winside 3rd District D-2 Did not qualify
Isaiah has been relegated during his first two years to mostly wrestling JV matches until called on to wrestle in place of a varsity wrestler who is not wrestling for some reason or another. Most of the time this results in Isaiah having to move up a weight class or two giving a definite advantage to heavier opponents. This was the case in the District D-2 meet at Creighton this year when Joey Haase developed a skin rash and was unavailable to compete. Isaiah weighed in at a 164.53 lbs wrestling in the 182 pound weight division. Isaiah despite giving up almost 20 points came out of the district meet with a win.

170 Zach Jones - Senior 8-12 20-19 19-17 27-10 (74-58)
Creighton 3rd North Bend 1st Winside 1st Battle Creek 2nd Lewis and Clark 3rd District D-2 4th State Qualifier

Zach started the season off winning seventeen of his first eighteen matches. Zach qualified for the state meet by beating Alex Wilder of Clearwater Orchard in the quarterfinals - an opponet he had lost to the previous week at the Cyclone Invite. Zach will attempt to follow in the footsteps of older brother Forrest who was a state runner-up in 2012.

182 Joey Haase - Sophomore 1-10 6-27 (7-37)
Winside 4th
Joey, another Wildcat giving up weight to his opponents, is the wrestler who epitomizes the sport of wrestling. On the opposite end of the spectrum - record wise - from a Marcos Escalara Joey is the guy who puts in the same amount of practice, works just as hard and has the same expectations as every other Wildcat wrestler. Joey has improved from a year ago and can look forward to a better year next year. Put Joey behind the wheel of a race car and enjoy the ride.

195 Jon Escalante - Freshman 21-27 (21-27)
Winside 4th Battle Creek 4th Lewis and Clark 3rd Ainsworth 4th Clearwater 4th District D-2 Did not qualify
Jon started his high school mat career as a Freshman competing against the big boys. While wrestling opponents who were in general older and more experienced than him Jon held his own on the mats as the season progressed. Jon made steady improvements during the course of the season and gained valuable experience heading into next year. A full summer in the weight room should lead to a successful season for Jon next year.

220 - Cory Shoff Sophomore (18-13 York) 30-13
North Bend 2nd (285) South Sioux City 2nd (285) Winside 2nd (285) Battle Creek 3rd Lewis and Clark 2nd Oakland Craig 3rd Clearwater 2nd District D-2 2nd State Qualifier

Cory upset number two seed Casey Garcia of Neligh Oakdale in the district semi-final match before losing to NSWCA No. 2 rated Justin Dearmont of North Central in the D-2 finals match.
Cory follows older brothers Mike and Brock Shoff on the wrestling mats. Mike was a three time state champion and runner-up with Brock also earning a state medal.

285 Zane Jensen -Senior 3-14 19-22 17-21 13-17 (52-74)
North Bend 3rd (220 South Sioux City 4th (220) Lewis and Clark 4th
4th place district District D-2 Did not qualify
Zane Jensen has spent four years on the mats for the Wildcats and in most cases has wrestled bigger opponents his entire career. Weighing in at anywhere from the upper 190s to 220 Zane for much of his career as a Wildcat wrestled the majority of his matches in the 285 pound weight class.
